Lego Masters

Writer: Josh WalkerJosh Walker

One of our new family favorites

Last night was the season finale of Lego Masters and I won't spoil anything, but my favorite team won!

The whole season is available to watch online, so if you haven't seen it yet, you should take a look. It's become one of my family's favorite TV shows of the spring.

Hosted by Will Arnett, the voice of Batman in The Lego Batman Movie, Lego Masters combines two of our favorites, Lego and reality competition shows.

I'm not a hardcore collector or builder (check out the craziness on The Brothers Brick), but I am a Lego kinda guy. On the bookshelf in my reading corner is Women of NASA set, minifigures like Gollum are known to populate the nooks and crannies of my house, and I still have some pieces of my 80's space sets. I passed my love of Lego to my kids, and their obsession far surpasses my own – shelves full of builds, binders packed with instructions, homemade stop-motion videos, trips to Legoland, and bins and bins and bins. Just last week, my 17-year-old son's Easter basket included a Lego set!

Then there is the reality competition element. Already this week we've watched Ink Master, The Great Foodtruck Race, Buddy vs. Duff, Making the Cut, and the granddaddy of them all, Survivor. There's something about these types of shows that have us hooked.

So, yeah, Lego Masters was like specifically designed for us.

Will Arnett and the judges Amy and Jamie examine the theme park challenge builds in episode one.

Lego Masters had some incredible creations and crazy challenges. The contestants used components in so many innovative ways. Check out the carrot monster below and watch Will Arnett take a bat to a planet during the smash challenge, where contestants had to make creations that were intentionally destroyed.

Another aspect of the show that was cool was that the judges, Amy Corbett and Jamie Berard, who are "master builders" and design managers for Lego, also gave building tips and advice. Their "Brick Tips" series is available to watch on YouTube.

Watching Lego Masters has reignited my interest in Lego. Maybe I'll go through some of those bins in the garage and create something for the Build Your Own Monument Contest.

One of my favorite Lego sets from when I was a kid (Brickset).
