I Want Ice Cream!

Writer: Josh WalkerJosh Walker

One assignment from my Nat Geo course

I recently finished Mapping as a Visualization and Communication Tool in Your Classroom from Nat Geo Education and I wanted to share one of the assignments that I completed for the course. I'd like to say that I just happen to have had ice cream on my mind when it was time to complete the assignment, but the truth is that I pretty much always have ice cream on my mind 🤷🏽‍♂️.

In week three, called "Using Maps to Visualize Data," we were asked to make our own map. Earlier in the day, I read "The 15 Tastiest Ice Cream Shops in the U.S." from Travel Awaits (yep – ice cream on the brain!), so I thought that it might be fun to learn how to use Google Maps by locating all of the recommended shops.

After doing so, I thought I'd add the locations from a couple of other articles that I had saved, "The 33 Best Ice Cream Shops in America" from Thrillist and "Celebrating America, Scoop by Frosty Scoop" from The New York Times. Then, I decided to add my own ice cream excursions to the map. I played around with the layers, colors, and icons and soon I had to cut myself off because, in typical nerd-fashion, I started to get carried away! Plus, I was craving ice cream.

So here's what I made:

As you see, some shops, such as Bi-Rite Creamery in San Francisco, Crank and Boom Ice Cream Lounge in Lexington, and The Parlour in Durham, appear on more than one list, so they must be pretty darn good.

There are so many more things I could add – in fact, since making it I visited Prince Pucklers in Eugene, Oregon – so maybe this will be an on-going project.

One perk to having a son who goes to UC Santa Barbara is frequent visits to McConnell's.
