Recent Obsessions

Part of an occasional series

Yes, I did it. I fell victim to the classic blogger blunder. Life got a bit nutty (well, nuttier) and I went dark for a while...okay, a LONG while! Distance learning and all of its challenges have been a big factor, but truth be told, I've probably spent too much time reading social media and wallowing in current events. Now is a good time to snap back to it!

To that end, I present my latest installment of Recent Obsessions!

  • It's sumo tournament time and you've got to see this move by Terunofuji. Watch the whole thing – Enho has a great win! – but the bout at about 20:50 is fantastic.

  • My new favorite animated series is Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal. Like his Star Wars: Clone Wars and Samurai Jack series, Primal is vintage Genndy Tartakovsky – stylish and atmospheric, with long stretches of silence broken by intense action. The story of a caveman and his dinosaur friend, the entire series is wordless and violent. It's definitely not for kiddos.

  • A couple of Saturdays ago I read Derf Backderf's new graphic novel Kent State: Four Dead in Ohio and it has stuck with me ever since. Derf tells the story of the days leading up to the Kent State shooting, the 50th anniversary of which was this past spring. The famous photographs have long been seared into my consciousness, but I've only had a passing understanding of what actually happened. Derf retells the events by weaving together the stories of participants and victims in his distinctive retro comix style. Combine that with the amazing parallels between the craziness of 1970 and 2020, and I was hooked.

  • Monkeys! Season 39 of PBS's Nature began a few weeks ago, and the last two episodes have been awesome. They have been the first two parts of a mini-series called Primates, "Secrets of Survival" and "Family Matters." Part three, "Protecting Primates," is coming this week. The episodes are streaming online, so you should watch them while you can, because what's not to love about hours of awesome monkeys (and apes and lemurs) from all over the world being their awesome monkey selves?

Bearded capuchins from Brazil eating cashews that they have cracked open using rocks.

  • I've been blown away by this photo of my home town that's on our city web site. It's a look at my town from a whole new angle, and Lord knows I've been needing a fresh perspective on things.

  • And, of course, there's The Mandalorian season 2. Binge-watching can be a fun guilty pleasure, but there's something about watching a good ol' fashioned weekly series with the fam every Friday night that makes it special. Last week, we grabbed a to-go order of popcorn, candy, and soda from our local theater and ooohed and ahhhed at Mando and The Child's latest adventure. A future classic!
