Riddle Me This

Breaks for your Brain or Breaking your Brain?

TEDEd Riddles are a doozy! They all have playful animation, a fun story to set up the problem, and they can be tough.

Check this one out, but make sure to hit pause before the solution!

If you're like me, you get hooked in and immediately try to think of what it would take to solve it. After a moment, you have to decide whether or not to dive in. Do it! I was able to solve the Sea Monster Riddle in a few minutes, but the Unstoppable Blob had me stumped.

I knew it had something to do with thinking outside of the box – er, triangle – but I was not quite there!

How about one more for good measure? This is a few twists on a classic brain-teaser that you may have seen before.

Visit TEDEd's Can You Solve This Riddle playlist on YouTube for 48 riddles (yes, 48!) and subscribe so that you can try the new ones as they're released.

Challenge yourself to tackle some of these bad boys. Kids, if you want to see your parents squirm, dare them to take a crack. Grab scratch paper and supplies (like game pieces, Lego, or random kitchen utensils) to draw or test your solutions and feel free to act them out in the living room.

Teachers, think of all of the ways you could use these riddles in your classroom, such as weekly brain busters, team-builders, or bonus challenges. Many of these riddles are a natural fit for the math classroom, but consider how they can be used in other contexts or content areas to develop creative problem-solving skills, growth mindset, cooperative learning, and so on. Also, check out the TEDEd website for lessons that go along with some of the riddles, like this one for Fire Crystal Riddle and this one for the Secret Sauce Riddle.
