More Summer Nerdiness

Something else I made this week :)

I wrapped up my third online class earlier this week, 21st Century Teaching & Learning, from youcubed and Stanford's Graduate School of Education. The instructor, Jo Boaler, is a math education guru, an advocate for reimagining how math is taught in schools, and a great teacher in her own right. I've written about youcubed and her work here and here.

The class was amazing and challenged me to find ways to incorporate data science into my classes this year, especially in the academic enrichment elective that I teach. I highly recommend it and all of youcubed's amazing resources, like their tasks, Week of Inspirational Math(s), and Mathematical Mindsets work.

The final assignment of the class was to create a visual representation of what I learned. I happen to be on a mini "vacation," so I was a little limited in what I had to work with, but this is what I came up:

The four principles of data science are question asking, pattern-seeking, meaning-making, and communication and the whole process is built on a foundation of having a growth mindest. Immediately the classic 80s cartoon Voltron (and its reboot on Netflix) came to my mind – all of the individual members of the team join together to form a giant, universe-defending robot. Voltron often has a sword, which was perfect to represent curiosity, one of the most important elements of question-asking and what I personally think is key to successfully breaking down the walls that so many people have built up around math.

So there's my little visualization 🤓.
