Kiva U

Free lessons from one of my favorite non-profits

Back in 2008, a good friend of ours gave my wife and me a gift of a lending credit to Kiva. Neither of us had heard of Kiva and we had no idea what a crowdfunded loan or microfinancing was. Now, after 94 loans to people in 42 countries, Kiva is a big part of our charitable giving plan.

In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, Kiva has expanded its work and has created a set of lessons for at-home learning. Called Kiva U, the lessons are divided up by age group and have eight categories:

  • food systems

  • refugees

  • global poverty

  • gender equality

  • gratitude and empathy

  • clean water

  • power of family

  • microfinance

Though they are designed for parents to teach their children, the lessons are easily adaptable to the classroom. I think they would be great to use in an advisory class or in a life skills-type class. Most of the lessons have four or five activities and take around an hour to complete.

You can learn more about Kiva's program for students, also called Kiva U, how to set up a team for your students or school, and play their game, Global Impact, by clicking here.
