Pop-Up History School

Writer: Josh WalkerJosh Walker

Free online classes from Gilder Lehrman

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History is offering a series of live online lessons for students called Pop-Up History School. From now until May 25th, there will be six lessons per week, two for each grade level (grades 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12).

Week 1 has already passed – I'm bummed that I missed out on "Arriba! Arriba! The Legend of Roberto Clemente" – but there are still four weeks of classes ahead.

The elementary classes include hands-on activities, like making a Cold War cookie cake map and a Korean War-themed scavenger hunt. Upcoming middle school classes include titles like "Kent State and the Amplification of Protest: 13 Seconds, 13 Casualties and the Amplification of Protest Music" and "Skirted Soldiers: The Women’s Army Corps."

Because they go along with topics we covered in my elective class this year, I'll also be encouraging my students to take the classes about Japanese internment and the 1963 Children's March. A two-part series for high school students that deals with comic books and the Civil Rights movement sounds cool, too.

Gilder Lehrman has an incredible assortment of materials and resources. Already this week I've written about their EduHam at Home program, for example. Click the logo above to go to their home page and peruse their programs, resources, and archives. Their teacher seminars, which are usually summer residential programs but have moved online this year, are also very popular.
