Anniversary of the San Francisco Earthquake
April 18th is the anniversary of the San Francisco earthquake and fire and the California Historical Society has hundreds of incredible images of the event in their digital collection. Take a look at this video from their YouTube channel:
In a nod to current events, the California Historical Society Blog commemorated the anniversary of the earthquake by looking at relief efforts and the early stages of rebuilding the city. Read the post, 1906 San Francisco Earthquake and Fire: Relief and Reconstruction; the images of the "provisions line", the refugee tent camps, and the wagons full of lumber on Market Street especially stood out to me.
The California Historical Society has a wealth of primary and secondary sources available, both online and in-person, and selections from their collections are on exhibit in their museum in San Francisco. If you want to take a deeper dive into both their online and traditional/physical collections, start here.
Teachers, CHS and the California History-Social Science Project worked together to create the Teaching California website which focuses on using primary sources to teach the California state framework.
