Berlin!

Me in front of Brandenburg Gate

June 25th was our travel day to Berlin. We took the ICE high-speed train and at one point hit 251 km/h (just shy of 155 mph)! Rail travel in Germany is much more common than in the States, so the Berlin Central Station was busy. We navigated our way through the chaos and caught taxis to our hotel.

For dinner, several of us ate at a Bavarian restaurant. We had a lot of fun sharing stories and talking about a ton of random topics. This is by far the best group of teachers I've spent time with at a professional development opportunity.

It was my grandparents' 70th wedding anniversary, so I left the group after dinner and made a Facetime call to the anniversary party. I normally do not like to make calls in public spaces, but on the way back to the hotel I decided to explore the Gendarmenmarkt, the public square across the street. With the two huge churches, the concert hall, and the outdoor cafes, it looked like the perfect place to share with the family.

A sign in the Berlin Central Station to assist incoming Ukrainians, the Gendarmenmarkt, and a sign advertising waxing services.

The next day, June 26th, was a free day. When I learned a few days ago that there was a place in Berlin called Museumsinsel (Museum Island), I knew that's where I wanted to go! We assembled the Museum crew from the other day – me, Beth, and Ginny – added my Bonnsfunfte partner, Sandra, and made plans to spend the day getting lost in the massive museums of Berlin. More on what we saw in my next post!

The entire island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site! Here are a few of the museums: The Deutsches Historisches Museum, the James-Simon-Galerie (and temporary entrance to the Pergamonmuseum), the colonnade leading to the Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Berliner Dom, and the Bode Museum.
